Ergonomics is the study of how humans interact with manmade objects. The goal of ergonomics is to create an environment that is well-suited to a user's physical needs. Many experience discomforts in several parts of their body due to the fact that they are placed in unfit environments for long periods of time during work. In order to avoid such pains, ergonomics takes into consideration the most safe, comfortable, and efficient materials employees should apply in the workplace. Ergonomics can reduce costs of compensation and health care for your company, as well as personal payments for a doctor or therapy for possible injuries caused by poor ergonomics.

Not only does poor ergonomics create discomforts physically, but also mentally. In an unhealthy work environment employees experience negative behaviors such as fatigue, stress, and frustration. By creating a user-friendly work environment, businesses and their employees are able to reach their full and best performance. In fact, many ergonomics studies have shown an increase in productivity, and a reduction in work errors, employee turnover, and employee absences.

Although a large amount of body pain can occur due to a poor ergonomic workplace, you only need to make small changes to create a good one. These minor changes can be as little as the placement of your computer or chair, and even the distance between your eyes to your computer. Here are some workplace Do’s and Don’ts if you would like to experience a healthy work setting:

DO:

  • Maintain relaxed shoulders
  • Have back and arm support
  • Keep your thighs horizontal and feet flat on the floor
  • Ensure your eyes are at screen level and at a correct distance so you are not angling your neck down and up or straining your eyes

DON'T:

  • Sit or type for extended periods of time without getting up and moving around
  • Type on your keyboard with your wrists bent down (can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome)
  • Have your keyboard or computer placed on your side (avoid twisting your midsection/head repeatedly)
  • Keep your phone tucked between your head and shoulder while talking on the phone
